SEARCH FOR UP-TO-DATE information CONVERSION HART

To discover the comparative cost of heating with different fuels, find the appropriate price of propane, oil, electricity and anthracite coal in your area. Locate under the Fuel Unit Cost column. Then, compare the corresponding cost per million BTU's in the Energy Unit Cost column to determine how much you will save after converting to anthracite coal.

The following representations are based on a standardized unit price for the fuel, which may not be typical of the costs in your geographical location. It also does not take into consideration any volume pricing discounts which may be offered by your local fuel dealer. Always check with your local fuel dealers for the most current pricing and availability in your area.

EXAMPLE: The average unit cost of fuel oil in New York City is $1.00 per gallon. The Energy Unit Cost column shows that this is an approximate cost of $7.21 per million BTU's. The average cost of a ton of anthracite coal in New York (delivered) is $130.00 - an Energy Unit Cost of $4.81 per million BTU's. By using anthracite coal, you would be saving $2.40 per million BTU's.

= 7325 kilowatts of electricity
= 298 gallons of propane
= 1.47 tons of wood pellets
Environmental Outlook--Coal

Pennsylvania Anthracite coal is very clean burning and produces no visible smoke or creosote. However, the mining of coal can produce some negative effects on the environment. One piece of good news - all anthracite coal mined today is mined from mines that were opened way back before World War II. So, no new mines are being dug. Also, a strict policy dictates that the mining companies restore the land to it's former condition. Coal is not renewable (at least not without waiting a few million years).

Coal is most efficient when burned in freestanding stoves. Some stoves are "dual-fuel" and capable of burning both wood and coal.

Maintenance--Coal Stoves-- Coal stoves produce no creosote or tar, and the chimney and smokepipe will usually only contain a white or brown fine ash coating. It is important to clean the coal stove, smokepipe and chimney immediately following the burning season as this ash can be quite corrosive when combined with the heat and humidity of the spring/summer.

How Long will they last? A quality coal stove could easily last ten years or more. Coal burns much hotter than wood, so it should be common to replace coal grates and liners over the years.
